Review: Supernatural - S05E01 Sympathy for the devil

As I am not living in the US and cannot see the airing of the show in real time here is my review of the season 5 start of Supernatural.

The episode is called Sympathy for the devil (sftd) and it took us right back into the action.

Spoilers ahead.

Mark the text to read it:

With a nice short intro showing us "The road so far" we got right back into where we left off. The seal was broken and the Winchester brothers await the arrival of the devil.
With a beam of light they find themselves on a plane just above the spot and in the next scene they are driving in their car discussing how they have escaped.
It was a nice devolepment and I think it was very good to have avoid them facing Lucifer right away.
When they return to Chuck, the prophet, they find out that Castiel has been destroyed by the arch angel.
Zacharias and other angels appear and demand from Dean that he will now do their bidding and kill Lucifer. But he banishes them with a seal painted with his blood which he had learnt from his friend Cas.
I don't really want to get into too much detail of the story and will tell you what I liked.
When they were meeting up with Bobby I thought it was a stroke of genius that Bobby actually was possessed by a demon. The Winchesters would be trusting Bobby and at a time likes this forget to check if he was possessed. Very nicely done.
I quite liked the the fact that Bobby was stronger than the demon in the end and overcame him, preventing Dean from getting killed and instead rammed the knife in his own body killing the demon.
Meg showing up again was a bit of a surprise and I will see what I will make of it as the story develops. For now I just take it as it is.
Lucifer needing a vessel before he can wreak havoc is a nice idea. This way they can show him as the seducer who he is known out of the Bible.
Instead of naming the episode Sympathy for the devil it could have been called Sympathy from the devil.
If the visions Lucifer's vessel saw were in his imagination as he was tortured by memories of his murdered wife and kid, or if Lucifer had something to do with them to convince his vessel to take him in is not known. And I liked that as well. It adds to the mystery of the devil. What are his plans? He promised revenge and justice thus seducing his vessel.
I don't know yet how I liked Dean being Michael's sword or his vessel. I guess if the Winchesters have a part to play I would prefer they do it actively and not as an "Angel's condom" as Dean put it.
The fact that Castiel shows up again and confirms that he actually was dead but is back again adds an element of mystery. That the Sam and Dean were beamed up into the plane was not done by the angels, as Castiel says is another mystery.
Did god get involved in the end after all? Is he responsible for Castiels return and the saving of the brothers? Who else could be?

Can't wait to see the next episode.
